Folakemi Odedina, Ph.D., Joint Professor in Radiation Oncology, Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research, has been chosen to serve on the AACR-Minorities in Cancer Research (MICR) Council for a three-year term (2020-2023).
Dr. Odedina’s appointment was announced June 25, 2020 by Robin E. Felder, MICR Director, Membership and Professional Development. Felder noted that Dr. Odedina’s many contributions to cancer research and dedication to programs and activities in support of minority investigators resulted in the council’s enthusiastic and unanimous support for her nomination.
“This is a great opportunity to contribute to productivity of minorities in cancer research,” said Dr. Odedina. “I am truly honored.”
MICR, a group within the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), is committed to preventing and curing cancer while meeting the professional needs and advancing the careers of minority scientists. The MICR Council is the advisory body to the AACR leadership on issues of concern to minority investigators.
The purposes of MICR are to:
- Develop programs that address the needs of minority scientists in cancer research;
- Increase the participation, visibility, and recognition of minorities in cancer research;
- Provide diversity within the AACR’s membership, programs, committees, and leadership;
- Address the disparities in cancer incidence and mortality faced by minorities and the medically underserved; and
- Advocate for relevant science and legislative policies in consultation with the Science Policy and Legislative Affairs Committees.
Dr. Odedina’s responsibilities as a member of the MICR council would include serving as a representative of MICR; promoting the advancement of minorities in the cancer field; actively participating in MICR programs and activities; promoting MICR, its programs, and membership opportunities to investigators; and acting as a member of this advisory body to the AACR Board of Directors.
